Why Getting a Crown After a Root Canal Is So Important (Especially on Back Teeth)
After a root canal, many patients feel relieved that the infection has been removed and the tooth is “fixed.” While root canal therapy does resolve the infection inside the tooth, the long-term success of that tooth often depends on one critical next step: placing a crown.
This is especially true for posterior teeth—molars and premolars—which handle the majority of chewing forces in your mouth.
What a Root Canal Actually Does (and Doesn’t Do)
A root canal removes the infected or damaged pulp from inside the tooth, disinfects the canal system, and seals it to prevent reinfection. What it does not do is strengthen the tooth.
In fact, after a root canal, a tooth typically becomes more brittle over time because:
It no longer has vital blood supply
The remaining tooth structure is often already weakened by decay or large fillings
